This is the 24-page program book that was given to invited guests attending the spectacular opening and dedication of EPCOT CENTER at Walt Disney World in Florida on October 24, 1982. It provided descriptive material about EPCOT Center, information on participants, and the ceremonies held that day.  11" x 11".  This item is from the estate of Walt Disney Imagineer Bruce Gordon who joined WED Enterprises in 1980 and for 25 years contributed to the design and construction of numerous Disneyland and Walt Disney World attractions. He was largely responsible for the development of Splash Mountain and the conversion of Disneyland's Submarine Voyage lagoon into today's Finding Nemo attraction. At the time of his passing on 6 November 2007 he was working as show producer for the Walt Disney Family Museum that is scheduled to open in San Francisco, California in 2009. A signed statement on Mr. Gordon's Walt Disney Imagineering memo paper regarding the provenance of this item is included.  Item # 4395, $149

Among the rarest of the rare Disney theme park props are the costumes worn by the audio-animatronic characters that bring the attractions to life.  Here I'm pleased to present a unique piece of Walt Disney World history.  EPCOT's Horizons wowed Future World guests for over 20 years.  One of the most memorable scenes took place in the Sea Castle sequence as the diving instructor in the city beneath the sea goes over underwater safety with three students and their comic sidekick seal.  The script went like this:

Teacher:  " OK class, settle down. Now we're almost ready to go. But before we do, let's review our diving rules one more time."  The seal honks and the kids laugh.  Teacher: " (To the seal.) Relax, Rover. Come on kids, underwater safety's no joke. Scott?" Scott: " Yes?" Teacher:  " Let's hear those safety rules."  Scott:  " Stay in your group. Keep your buddy in sight. Always check your gill apparatus for full re-circulation." Teacher:  " How often, class?"  Class:  " Every ten minutes!"  Scott:  " Or more often!"  Teacher:  " That's right. Now, you're all good swimmers. I'm not worried about your swimming at all and I know this isn't your first dive, but tell me, what's the most important tool underwater?"  The seal barks.  Teacher:  " Wrong, Rover. It's judgement, you must use good judgement! And what else must you use, Scott?"  Scott:  " Swim safely. Follow your diving rules. And ..."  Teacher:  " And never horse around while diving. Never. Don't even sea horse around."  The kids laugh.

Bring back memories?  This costume certainly will!  Offered here is the neoprene wetsuit worn by the child with the helmet on her lap (see first photo)-- the actual costume from the EPCOT attraction which was closed several years ago.  Unlike clothing you and I wear, this animatronic costume completely opens up the back of both legs and both arms in addition to the back of suit in order to fit it onto a character whose feet were bolted to the floor and allow easy access to maintain the animatronics.  Velcro closures throughout.   Includes both boots and although the child does not wear gloves in this scene-- one glove is included.  Features EPCOT costume labels inside suit (see photo at right).  Shoulder patch has been removed;  the suit shows overall soiling and age.  Holes are NOT defects- they are part of the costume to allow the wires and rods necessary for audio-animatronic function.  An amazing item from the hands and minds of Walt Disney Imagineering.  A museum piece!  Item # 3116, $799

RARE, ORIGINAL DISNEYLAND ATTRACTION MODELS

To commemorate the opening of Disneyland's newly-designed Tomorrowland in 1998, Main Street's Disneyana shop offered finely hand-crafted models of Tomorrowland ride vehicles.  One of these was an Autopia car of the style in use from 1967-2000.  Disneyland customers could special order these hand-made replicas for later delivery.  In effect, custom-built miniature replicas.  Unfortunately, the project collapsed under it's own good intentions.  The detailed, high-quality models proved difficult to produce, delicate to ship, and the hand-made-to-order system allowed for little, if any profit.  Even as Disneyland guests ooh-ed and aaah-ed over the fine models, Disney closed down the project, with very few models ever being shipped.

Here I am proud to present two types of the Autopia model from this unique Disneyland sales event.  The models below fall into one of the following categories:
A)
The one-of-a-kind prototype, used by Disneyland in the conceptual phase of the project.  This car was never sold or placed on display, but was used internally by Disneyland during the planning of the merchandise event.  Again, this prototype was never sold to the public, and it is the only one of its kind, in which paint, construction materials, and details are unique to the prototype;
B)
The one-of-a-kind, actual, original display model that was exhibited in Disneyland's Disneyana Shop.  This display model was never sold, and varies slightly in appearance from the production models which were shipped to customers- so it is a rare and unique piece, the only of it's kind.  If you saw the Autopia car model on display under glass at Disneyland, this is the very same, actual model you saw, and;
Because of special packaging requirements, shipping is $14.95 on each piece.

Above and Left:  Original hand-sculpted prototype of the Autopia car model.  This prototype was created for use in discussions with Disneyland and Imagineering in order to narrow down the final look of the Autopia car model to be offered for sale at Disneyland in 1998.  The car is sculpted by hand out of lightweight foam which was then lacquered, sanded, and painted, is the only one of it's kind.

This prototype car measures 8.5" long, but is extremely light because of the foam construction.  Note the small dent to the left rear corner.  Metal is used for the bar across the hood and the front and back bumpers.  Black dashboard and headrest padding is authentically detailed.  This is the only Autopia model that has no interior floor detailing; the display model (immediately below) has pedals, while the final production version (far below) has a floor mat.  This rare car was never displayed or sold- it was used only in meetings with Disneyland and Imagineering during the planning phase of the sales event.  Autopia car prototype, Item # 1671, $399

The model above is the one-of-a-kind, actual, original display model that was exhibited in Disneyland's Disneyana Shop.  This display model was never sold, and varies in appearance from the production models which were shipped to customers- so it is a rare and unique piece, the only of it's kind.  This is the only model that featured gas and brake pedals.  The prototype had no floor detail, and the final models shipped to customers featured a floor mat instead of pedals.  It should also be noted that the real Autopia cars did not have brake pedal- releasing the gas applied the brakes automatically.  Also note the incorrect steering wheel- the actual vehicles featured a wheel padded for safety, and this was corrected on the production version.  Another quirk of this display model is that the seat does not feature any representation of the black non-skid seats of the full-size cars.  Although not pictured, this display model includes a simple wood base.  Note the paint defect on the hood;  splits in the paint allowed the paint to discolor.  The car measures 8.5" long, is made of solid resin, and weighs about 1.5 pounds.  If you saw the Autopia car model on display under glass at Disneyland, this is the very same, actual model you saw.  A rare, one of a kind piece.  Item # 1670, $399

Personally signed by John Hench, this giant  31" x 25" lithograph has been stored in new condition in the stockroom of the Imagineering company store for almost 20 years!   This fine art litho was commissioned to mark Disney's first European theme park, Disneyland Paris, in 1988.  It was sold only to Imagineering and Disney theme park and studio employees, and the edition was limited to just 4200.  A few of these lithographs got tucked away in the storerooms the Imagineering company store and there they sat in new condition for nearly two decades.  We recently purchased a small number of these newly-discovered lithographs directly from Imagineering's "Mickey's of Glendale" employee store.

John Hench- who passed away in 2004-  joined Disney as a sketch artist in 1939. Over the many decades he contributed his artistic talents to animation, live-action film, and work with Walt Disney Imagineering.

Hench's animation contributions include background painting and special effects in Fantasia, Dumbo, Cinderella and Peter Pan, as well as collaboration with Salvador Dali on the proposed (but never completed) film Destino. In the live-action film arena, Hench received an Academy Award in 1954 for the lead screen credit in special effects on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

In 1955 he moved to W.E.D. Enterprises (now known as Walt Disney Imagineering) to work on Tomorrowland for the grand opening of Disneyland.  As an Imagineer he worked as a conceptual artist, art director and executive truly epitomizing Ray Bradbury's description of Imagineers as Renaissance men.  Hench helped develop countless attractions, as well as helping to master-plan the development of Walt Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, EPCOT and Disneyland Paris.  Hench eventually became Executive Vice President of Walt Disney Imagineering.  An employee of the Walt Disney Company for more than sixty years, John Hench was continuously employed by Disney longer than any other person.  In 2003 he published a look back at his career with Disney entitled "DESIGNING DISNEY." He passed away in 2004 at the age of 95- still working for Disney.

This beautiful signed lithograph is printed on archival Strathmore Writing Cover stock and created with fade resistant, oil based process inks.  It is personally signed and numbered by John Hench.  Measures approximately 31" x 25".  Includes my Life Certificate of Authenticity.   Item # 3160, $69.95
